The Road to Cadillac

Sorry -- this is Saturday's post -- but didn't have internet hookup last night...

5:12 is the time of sun up over the lake in Menomie, MI. It was beautiful and bright. Joyce was still sleeping, but I got this picture. Orv brought us breakfast in bed by paddling the banana boat...

Wonderful breakfast at Econolodge! On the road by 8:30 am. Then the beautiful scenic route around Lake Michigan. Love the views! Lots of property available to buy in upper Michigan – if you want lakefront property that’s the place to look. Must be hundreds of properties.

Took a slight detour to visit Old Cook’s Cemetery. Took a photo of these signs for Christi – we found it an interesting juxtaposition.

Then took a long sandy road back to this cemetery in the middle of the woods. Weird – it got forgotten in time about 1912 and was “recovered” recently through an eagle scout project. Strange, but true...

TICKS! TICKS! TICKS!

Did I ever tell you how much I hate wood ticks? I HATE WOOD TICKS! Guess what we found pestering us because of our woodland adventure! Joyce found the first two & I found the last one – I hope.

I HATE TICKS!

Orv found some fun places to check out in upper Michigan.

Orv even found a trail reserved for him alone! (We discovered that in Michigan the letters ORV stand for “Off Road Vehicle” or what we in Wisconsin call an ATV.

The Mackinac Bridge was a beautiful sight. The sun was high in the sky and the weather beautiful as we watched a huge sailboat that looked tiny as we towered over it. We also saw one of the jet ferries heading out for Mackanic Island. It shoots spray 50 feet in the air as it speeds toward its destination.

We had hoped to eat once we got over the bridge but couldn’t find a non-tourist trap restaurant and so we continued on to Gaylord about an hour away.

At Gaylord we discovered a timely problem. Dave had been figuring we saved an hour traveling from Wisconsin to Michigan. WRONG! We lost an hour. So instead of it being 1:30, it was actually 3:30! At which point I freaked out since it was still a long drive to Cadillac!

A quick Wendy’s burger for the road and a quick fill-up – gas was $2.91 at the Clark Station and we were back on the highway.

We reached Cadillac and the Hoogervorst’s house about 5 p.m. We received a warm welcome. It was so nice to see them all. Pastor Jim, his wife Kate, Adam, and Daniel. Here they are with Orv.

They treated us to a home cooked meal of grilled steak, fresh salad, asparagus, roast potatoes, wonderful cherries and more. MMM! MMM! We had a great time catching up on things. The boys were bundles of energy and great fun. At ages 2 and 4, they are so well-spoken and have lots to say. We especially enjoyed their singing – Star Wars and Indiana Jones theme, plus I am Jesus’ Little Lamb, This is My Father’s World, and Glory to God.

Joyce and Orv also got a chance to visit the waterfront and the Music Park!

We also cruised the main Ave of Cadillac – which is undergoing major reconstruction by the way.

Time for bed…check in tomorrow!
